Afterimages – Art Practice in Times of Conflict

Images of crisis, conflict and war seem to haunt us. They leave heavy imprints on our memory and fail thereby quite often to activate empathy, solidarity or possibilities of action. What are the regimes of time performed by repetitive images of violence we are confronted with? How to analyze and understand them? And how is art practice, which tries to shift their content, possible? Using performance, video and photography I will propose a rearrangement of actual political dimensions of images of conflict and their temporalities.

Ana Hoffner is engaged in an art practice that excavates conflictuos moments in history and politics and searches for queer sides in their visual cultural representation. Hoffner’s performances, video and photo installations seek to introduce temporalities, relations and spaces in-between established perspectives and memories of iconic images and highly performative events. Hoffner employs means of appropriation such as restaging photographs, interviews and reports and desynchronization of body and voice, sound and image. She* has finished the PhD in Practice Program at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 2014. Ana Hoffner’s work has been shown in Kunsthalle, Wiener Secession, Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Künstlerhaus Passage, Kunstraum Niederösterreich, Neuer Kunstverein, Tanzquartier, 21er Haus and mumok Cinema in Vienna and in Künstlerhaus Graz, Salzburger Kunstverein, Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen and Museum Moderner Kunst Klagenfurt. Additionally she* has shown her work in LACE
Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Galerie für zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig, Museum of Contemporary Art Banja Luka, Stedelijks Museum s’Hertogenbosch, City Art Gallery Ljubljana, HDLU Croatian Association of Artists Zagreb, Kunstraum Bethanien Berlin and Belgrade Cultural Center.
